I’m thinking pinks and reds for Valentine’s Day and vibrant purple and green for a spooky Halloween cake. Ingredients Eggs: Opt for large and fresh eggs when baking. It’s a good idea to let them reach room temperature before adding them to the cake batter. And I will also say from the beginning… YES I KNOW THE RAINBOW HAS SEVEN COLOURS. This cake, is only six. When baking this cake, I just find making 6 colours so much easier, and you can see the obvious differences. I am not bothered about the seventh! Then, you mix it all together like normal, and then split into three bowls. It doesn’t matter which colours you do first, but I did red, orange, and yellowtogether, and then green, blue and purple.

Color the batter. Once the cake batter is mixed well, divide it into 6 equal portions. (You can use more or less colors, or opt for whatever colors you like.) Color each portion of batter a different color with gel food coloring, mixing until the color and batter are thoroughly combined. So, grab some food coloring and a box of cake mix, and let’s bake a rainbow cake! Easy Rainbow Layer Cake Recipe

Ingredients

Storing: Once you’re done assembling and decorating your cake, pop it into the fridge until you’re ready to chow down. Add the final layer of cake on top, the frost the outside of the cake. Feel free to use my tutorial for frosting a smooth cake, if you like. Pipe buttercream. Pipe buttercream frosting around the outside edge of your cake. Then either continue to add buttercream to make an even layer in the center of your cake, or fill it with a flavored filling of your choice.

This will help the buttercream stay firm and prevent it from melting all over the place, especially if you’re on the go. Freezing: For long term storage, cover the cake tightly with plastic wrap then foil and place it in the freezer for up to a year (again dependent on any spoilable toppings and/or fillings). When ready to eat, thaw it in the fridge overnight then set it out to come to room temperature before you slice and serve.Shortening: Shortening is the secret ingredient for creating frosting with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Frost the sides. Then spread a light coat of frosting on the top and sides of the cake to seal in the crumbs. Then, finish the cake with the remaining frosting. Perfect the consistency. Add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, and beat until the frosting is smooth. Now it’s time to crank up the speed and beat on high until the frosting is light and fluffy. The oven temperature is a bit lower than normal, as I don’t want the sponges to brown too much. This also comes somewhat from the brands of colours that you use! Red food colouring, orange food colouring, yellow food colouring, green food colouring, blue food colouring and purple food colouring. for the sponge mixtures!

The following is a list of six cake ideas that you can use to make your next birthday party extra special. As for the milk in this cake, I use buttermilk. It really lends a more tender cake in this instance, so I 100% recommend it. I know it’s a pain to buy a whole container of buttermilk, so do what I do and buy powdered buttermilk. It’s brilliant! You add a little of the powder to your dry ingredients, then add water when it’s time to add the liquid. The powdered buttermilk stays good for months in the fridge, so you can use it in later recipes without having to waste anything. Rainbow Swirl Technique For the buttercream, you do use 750g unsalted butter and 1500g icing sugar, which technically is a little obscene but the amount of servings from this cake is huge so please don’t be a negative Nelly about the sugar content! Chilling your cake before decorating makes it so much easier! I find my favorite method is to wrap the individual cake layers tightly in cling film and chilling them in the fridge before I apply the crumb coat.Place the first layer of cake on a cake plate or cardboard cake circle, then top it with about 1 cup of frosting and spread into an even layer. Remember, white velvet cake is best for this recipe. Also, it is very white to add the colors you want for the rainbow layers easily. Additionally, adding colors to a cake with egg yolks will change your colors while baking. Finally, keep in mind that white velvet cake will not go over mix when adding your color. So… I will say from the beginning that this recipe uses lots and lots of ingredients, and it is a humongous cake! Like, its 6 layers of cake, and all the buttercream in-between the layers, and all the decor on top! Milk: Use any milk you have. It helps to thin out the frosting and make it easier to spread on the cake.
